What We Love About Going Virtual

A few months ago we went from a brick & mortar location to a completely virtual company. We’re online, working remote, and still killing it. In our last blog we explained the details of the move and how we traded offices for coffee shops, you can read more about that here.

While it’s been great for our company, it’s also been great for us. We wanted to get a little more personal and talk about the individual things that we love about our new virtual setup.

Crystal:

My workspace varies from day-to-day. Throughout the week you can find me working from my bed, the couch or back porch, a coffee shop, poolside, my mom’s house, in the car on my way to the beach or mountains, literally anywhere. I can travel with my husband on his work trips and work from any city I need to.

It gives me the autonomy to determine my schedule and I can do everyday chores or run errands in between working. For example I can do laundry, walk the dog, grocery shop (and avoid the evening crowds), or decorate for fall. I am not limited to just working 8-5. That is my typical work schedule and I tend to work really hard during those hours but I am still able to squeeze in my chores and to-do list.

Another aspect I love is that I can be at home with my sweet dog and literally wear gym clothes and a ball cap (of course when I don’t have client meetings). I don’t have to pack my breakfast or lunch because I have my own cafeteria at my disposal and since we aren’t in the office together all the time, we tend to go out more for team lunches or dinners. It gives us time to step away from ‘werk’ talk!

Jordan:

While there are many things to like about our virtual setting at Werkshop, my favorite would be getting to work at my personal home desk, self-dubbed “The Creative Corner.” I love that I can work from a local coffee shop in the morning or sitting on my balcony in the afternoon, but there is something special about getting to sit in my own vibrant workspace setup, put on my headphones, and do what I love. It’s also nice that I can take a break and pet my cats whenever I need it!

That perk, along with the flexibility & ease of which I can schedule my day helps me stay motivated, focused, and happy when it’s time to get work done. I definitely love the virtual setup we’ve adopted at Werkshop and know it’s one of the reasons we have the most fun and do our best work.

Hannah:

My favorite thing about being virtual is the flexibility. Not only in location- from a desk, from my kitchen counter, from Nashville, etc, but also the flexibility of my schedule. It allows me to go to the gym in the mornings, come home and shower, and get right to work with wet hair and a t-shirt. Or some mornings, just roll out of my bed and work in PJs for a few hours.

If I’m in a funk mid-day, I can take my dog for a walk around the block to clear my head so I can come back re-focused, or run to Sonic at happy hour for a little caffeine pick-me-up in the afternoons. But if I had to choose my FAVORITE part of working from home, it would be getting to hang out with my dog all day, everyday.

Tim:

I never thought we’d ever go virtual. Having a physical office just seemed logical. Everyone else had one. Made sense for us to have one as well. And we did for 12+ years. In fact, at one time we had two offices in different cities. Then we made the decision to go virtual and I could not be more thrilled with this move.

Many reasons went into making this decision, none of which were taken lightly. We wanted to make sure it made sense for not only ourselves but also our clients.

One obvious reason I like being virtual is the overhead we are saving. Office space does not come cheap these days. Allowing those savings to fall to the bottom line is pretty nice to watch. Another was the fact that our current staff was spread out in different cities and states and it just didn’t make sense for us to have an office anymore that no one really ever visited or worked out of.

Personally, I love the virtual nature of the company because of the freedom it brings me to work from wherever, whenever, and however I want. I travel a lot either to visit clients, seek out new clients, or speak at various conferences or organizations across the country. I can take my work with me wherever I go.

When at home, I enjoy getting up and enjoying a cup of coffee on the back porch while I check my email first thing in the morning. I get to spend more time with my family and helping out around the house with things I normally couldn’t do if I was in our office all day. Getting up and walking upstairs to my “home” office in gym shorts and a ballcap is hard to beat. Heading to the gym for my workout at odd times of day has also been good.

I certainly find myself being more productive in this virtual environment. Getting focused much quicker and working without interruptions has been nice. I think it has also made me less stressed. And as the leader of this company, that has been a blessing to many.
