What The Tech?

You might not even realize it, but our culture is suffering from a vast addiction problem. Technology addiction isn’t new, but it is getting worse. The amount of time we spend on our phones, computers, and ipads adds up to a startling amount of our lives. The hysteria of technology is easy to get sucked into, just look at the new iPhone X release, and there is nothing actually wrong with social media or technology in general, but it is important to make sure you’re still in control.

The iPhone changed the world.

It’s something you probably already know, but maybe haven’t thought about before. With Apple’s launch of the iPhone ten years ago, they changed the world and the direction of so many variables, from business to marketing, from the technology industry to our own lifestyles. If you really think about, there are a number of things and industries that phones, with the iPhone leading the way, have replaced.

Calculators

Alarm Clocks

Notepads

Newspapers

Books

Radios

Cameras

Stereos

The list could go on and on but the iPhone has essentially replaced most, if not all, of those items on an individual basis. Now, that is not to say it has replaced them all entirely. I, for one, would much rather read a physical book that I can touch and feel than anything on a screen. However, for convenience sake, the iPhone has provided an application for all of those items and more. To some extent the iPhone has even replaced the need for computers. Not entirely, but definitely regularly. This blog was actually written completely from my iPhone 7, shameless plug, but it goes to prove the point.

 

From that point it’s easy to see why tech addiction is not only a real thing but can be a real problem. We use our phones for anything and everything and the comfort and habit of that little screen is hard to ignore. The addiction aspect comes in when you find yourself using your phone nonstop, missing or distracting from life events away from your phone screen, and going to your phone as a sense of habit (routinely checking your socials, texts, and emails in a never ending cycle).

 

It’s at that point we see tech addiction as a real epidemic and something that should be addressed. We believe phones, the internet, and social media are wonderful tools, and as a branding agency we pride ourselves on our expertise & knowledge in not just knowing how to use them but knowing how to make them effective. However, we also know the issues technology can bring to light. It’s always good to remember a couple technology fundamentals:

 

  • Take time away from the screen, including putting the iPhone down.
  • Get together with other humans in real life and get outside.

 

Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, even technology, and it’s up to us to know when is too much and to make sure we’re keeping a balance in our life & on our screens. Give it a try, you’ll be surprised how much of a difference it makes.
